Relative insensitivity of enhanced Rr to paramutation in maize plants heterozygous for the stippled allele.

چکیده
ATA presented in the preceding article (BRINK and BLACKWOOD 1961) D demonstrate that the effect of R' on aleurone color in maize is enhanced when the factor is carried by, or passed through, either of two reciprocal translocations, T2-10a and T4-lob, involving breaks in the long arm of chromosome 10 proximal to, but well removed from, the R locus. The change in phenotype is from darkly mottled in R'rgrg testcross kernels to near-self-color in T2-1 Oa R'/rgrg and T4-10b R'/rgrg seeds. There is a lag of at least one generation in the manifestation of such enhancement after introducing R' from a stock source into a structurally altered chromosome; and the change, once induced, persists for at least one generation following return of the allele to a structurally normal chromosome 10, by crossing over. The results summarized in the present report establish the additional fact that R', on thus being changed from the standard to the enhanced form, is much less sensitive than a normal R' allele to reduction in aleurone pigment-producing potential in plants heterozygous for the stippled (R") allele.

aleurone pigmenting ability of certain R alleles in maize is changed T E i t a b l y when these factors are passed through heterozygotes with certain other alleles. For example, a factor termed standard Rr regularly gives reduced aleurone pigmentation in the offspring of RrRst (Rst = stippled aleurone) heterozygotes (MCWHIRTER and BRINK 1962), and enhanced pigmentation in the progeny of R'r ( r...

PREVIOUS studies, the results of which are briefly summarized in the paragraphs following, have shown that paramutation at the R locus in maize is strongly influenced by ionizing radiations and certain alkylating agents. The findings suggested that Xand -,+irradiation of heterozygotes carrying a paramutable and a paramutagenic R allele might be especially instructive with refernece to two major...

RINK (1956) reported the occurrence of an unusual phenomenon at the R locus in maize. The “standard” Rr (colored aleurone, colored plant) allele was observed to have decreased pigment producing capacity after being heterozygous (R‘ RSt ) with a “pattern” allele, stippled (R“) . Additional observations by BRINK and WEYERS (1957) showed that marbled (Rmb), another “pattern” allele, also produced ...

A transgene carrying a distal enhancer element of the maize P1-rr promoter caused silencing of an endogenous P1-rr allele in the progeny of transgenic maize plants. Expression of both the transgene and the endogenous P1-rr allele was reduced in the affected plants. The silenced phenotype was observed in the progeny of seven of eight crosses involving three independent transgenic events tested (...

L I N D E N (1963) first reported that the paramutation process in maize was radiosensitive. He showed that when pollen from plants homozygous for either paramutable standard R' or paramutagenic R alleles such as Rst (stippled aleurone) and Rmb (marbled aleurone) was gamma-irradiated, paramutation was altered in the heterozygotes into which these alleles were subsequently introduced. Evidence i...
